Thematic Retrospective

Dear friends,

Thematic was a truly unique and influential project that spanned over 7 years of development dating back to WordPress v2.6. It had 4 lead developers, many incredible contributors, a fine bunch of translators, at least a dozen awesome child theme developers, an altruistic support community, and the most awesome user base any theme author could wish for.

I’d like to take a moment to give thanks to this fine list of people who helped make Thematic awesome.

Ian Stewart, Chris Gossman, Gene Robinson(emhr), Karin Taliga(middlesister), Kathy Darling(helgatheviking), Scott Nix, Scott Frangos, Devin Price, dannydamnboy, hugo.baeta, sareiodata, Mariusz.Jamro, codecode-chokebore.net, Allan Cole, Dave Smith, Cristi Antohe, Chris Wallace, Altamente Decorativo, Able Parris, Hafiz Rahman, Leland at ThemeLab, JamesGeiger, vanpop, polnoft, petskratt, rcackerman, coliff, robYardman, d_rec, Kirk Wight, jopzrron, Jonny Janiero, xxxevilgrinxxx, jcollier, WraithKenny, ridgely

That’s not a complete list by any means. Simply a list of people who stand out in my memory. I welcome anyone to share their Thematic memories in the comments. I’d love to hear how Thematic helped you grow or what you think made Thematic great.

This is a sad moment for me. And yet a moment that is well overdue. It’s time to officially announce that the development of Thematic has ceased. In the end, Ian and I agreed it was time to let Thematic rest. We felt that it’s more recent development was better suited to exist as a fork.

In an effort to preserve Thematic’s legacy, I have forked it into: Deciduous, which picks up where Thematic’s development left off. Please take the time to drop in and star the project on GitHub if you’re interested in showing your support. If anyone is aware of other derivative projects of Thematic please share them in the comments. They may prove useful to someone in need of migration.

What does this mean for those of you who are actively using Thematic?

You will not be receiving updates from here on out. And gradually as WordPress evolves, Thematic may have compatibility issues that affect your site. I’m truly sorry but that is the bottom line and you deserve to know the truth.

What should you do if you have problems with your Thematic themed WordPress site?

Please visit the WordPress support forums for Thematic. The forums here will be closing down due to a lack of community involvement, moderation, and developer feedback. Hopefully the greater WordPress support community will be able to help you find a resolution.

I hope this news will bring some closure to those using the theme and left wondering what happened.

Sincerely,
Gene

  1. Thanks so much for the shoutout! I believe my only “contributions” were a couple Thematic child theme releases, which pale in comparison to the contributions of pretty much everyone else in that list.

I’ll see if I can dig them up, update them to be responsive (this was a long time ago) and turn them into Deciduous child themes when I have time.

    • Child theme developers were a big part of the Thematic community. It would be incredible to see that happen for Deciduous. Thanks!

This is truly sad, but I am already looking at your new project, Gene. Thematic is what got me into web development and WordPress and it led me to my career. I’m happy to see the new theme though – I’ll check out the GitHub repo soon.

  6. Thematic Themes are really awesome, easy to customize and responsive according to every screen size. My company is also using that theme for their official website. Octa Logo

  7. Much appreciated such a great amount for the applause! I trust my exclusive “commitments” were a couple custom made explainer video subject discharges, which could not hope to compare to the commitments of practically other people in that rundown.

The Thematic theme is a free, open-source, highly extensible, SEO friendly WordPress Theme Structure is highlighting 12 widget-ready areas, grid-based design samples, styling for commercial plugins and lots of great support. Logo Glaze is the web development company who mostly recommend and wok on Thematic theme.
